Beckett vs PSA vs JSA: Which Autograph Authentication Is Most Valuable?
Short answer: for signed trading cards, a PSA/DNA authentication (and especially a PSA-graded card with a PSA/DNA auto grade) usually brings the highest resale price and the widest buyer pool. For signed memorabilia like balls, jerseys, helmets and photos, Beckett (BAS) and JSA are the two names most buyers trust, and a witnessed authentication from either, or from Fanatics Authentic, beats a non-witnessed sticker from anyone. The signer, the item and whether the signing was witnessed move the price far more than the logo on the sticker does.
TLDR
- PSA/DNA: the most liquid name on signed cards; PSA slab + auto grade is what most card buyers quote.
- Beckett Authentication Services (BAS): the strongest second option on cards and a top choice for memorabilia; Beckett Witnessed stickers carry a premium.
- JSA (James Spence Authentication): the long-running memorabilia specialist; widely accepted at auction houses, strong on vintage and multi-signed pieces.
- Fanatics Authentic: witnessed-only, so every item traces to a signing event; the standard for modern licensed memorabilia.
- Witnessed beats examined. A sticker that says the authenticator watched the signature is worth more than one that says they looked at it afterward.

What "most valuable" actually means here
Collectors usually mean one of three things when they ask which authentication is most valuable: which one buyers trust most, which one brings the highest price when the same item is sold, and which one is hardest to fake. The three line up most of the time, but not always, and they differ between cards and memorabilia.
Two rules hold across every authenticator. First, a witnessed signature (the authenticator or their partner was in the room) is worth more than an examined one (the authenticator looked at the signature later and gave an opinion). Second, the market pays for the name it already knows on that type of item. A PSA sticker on a vintage game-used bat is fine, but the bat buyers at the big auction houses are used to seeing JSA and BAS, and that familiarity shows up in the hammer price.
PSA/DNA: the card market's default
PSA/DNA is PSA's autograph division. On signed trading cards it is the authentication most buyers search for, because it pairs with PSA's card grading: a card can come back in one slab with a card grade and a separate autograph grade from 1 to 10, and eBay and auction comps are deepest for that exact format. If your goal is the cleanest resale on a signed modern or vintage card, PSA/DNA is usually the right call.
Where it is weaker: on bulky memorabilia PSA/DNA is accepted but not preferred, and PSA's non-witnessed examination of an old signature is an opinion, like everyone else's. Check the cert on PSA's cert verification page before you pay.
Beckett (BAS): strong on both cards and memorabilia
Beckett Authentication Services launched in 2016 and is led by Steve Grad, who previously ran PSA/DNA, which is a big part of why the hobby took it seriously from day one. BAS offers both witnessed authentication (the "Beckett Witnessed" sticker) and examined authentication, and it grades autographs 1 to 10. A card that is BGS graded with a BAS auto grade competes directly with the PSA equivalent, and on some modern cards the BGS Pristine 10 with a 10 auto grade sells above a PSA 10.
On memorabilia, Beckett is a top-two name alongside JSA. The combination buyers like most is a Beckett Witnessed sticker on a card that was also signed at a Fanatics event, because the signing is documented twice. The Corey Seager 2022 Bowman we carry is exactly that setup. Verify any BAS cert at Beckett's certificate lookup.
JSA: the memorabilia and vintage specialist
James Spence Authentication was founded in 2005 by James Spence Jr., who had been a lead authenticator at PSA/DNA. JSA is the name you see most on baseballs, bats, jerseys, team-signed items and vintage pieces, and it is accepted by every major auction house. JSA also runs a witnessed program ("JSA Witnessed") and issues full letters of authenticity for higher-value items, which buyers of five-figure memorabilia expect.
On trading cards JSA is accepted but it does not carry the same premium as PSA/DNA or BAS, mostly because there is no JSA card-grading slab for comps to form around. If you have a signed card and want the best price, a JSA sticker is not a problem, but a PSA or Beckett slab usually sells for more. JSA certs can be checked at JSA's verification page.
Fanatics Authentic: witnessed, licensed, and everywhere in modern memorabilia
Fanatics Authentic is not a third-party opinion service; it only authenticates items signed at its own events, so every hologram ties back to a signing. For modern athletes under Fanatics exclusive deals, it is often the only way the signature exists at all. Resale value on Fanatics items is strong because the provenance is unambiguous, and the hologram lookup takes about a minute. We walk through that lookup step by step in our Fanatics Authentic hologram lookup guide.
Head to head: which one to choose
| Situation | Best choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Signed modern or vintage trading card you plan to sell | PSA/DNA (or BAS with BGS) | Deepest comps, slab with auto grade, widest buyer pool |
| Signed card you want graded with subgrades | Beckett (BGS + BAS) | Subgrades and Pristine 10 premium; witnessed option |
| Baseball, bat, jersey, helmet, photo | JSA or Beckett, witnessed if possible | Auction-house standard; LOA available for high value |
| Vintage or deceased signer | JSA or PSA/DNA letter | Longest examination track record on old ink |
| Modern athlete signed at a licensed event | Fanatics Authentic | Witnessed by definition; hologram lookup is instant |
| Multi-signed team item | JSA | Most experience on group signatures and team balls |
What moves the price more than the sticker
- Witnessed vs examined. Always ask which it is. Witnessed stickers from BAS, JSA, PSA and Fanatics all say so on the label.
- The signer and the item. A Mark Hamill signed card and a Mark Hamill signed photo are different markets even with the same sticker.
- Autograph grade. On cards, a 10 auto grade sells well above a 7 regardless of who issued it.
- Letter vs sticker. A full letter of authenticity with a photo of the item is standard above a few thousand dollars.
- Matching cert. The number on the sticker must resolve on the authenticator's site and match the item type and signer.
How we handle it at The Ballers Bank
Every signed item we list is already authenticated by Fanatics Authentic, Beckett, PSA or JSA, the cert has been looked up, and the item ships in its tamper-evident holder. If you are buying elsewhere, run the lookup yourself before paying and walk away if the seller will not show the sticker clearly. Our hologram verification guide covers the red flags.
Frequently asked questions
Is PSA/DNA better than JSA?
For signed trading cards, PSA/DNA usually sells for more because buyers quote PSA slabs and auto grades. For balls, bats, jerseys and vintage memorabilia, JSA is at least as trusted and often preferred. Neither is better in every case; the item type decides.
Is Beckett authentication as good as PSA?
Yes for most purposes. Beckett Authentication Services is run by former PSA/DNA leadership, offers witnessed authentication and auto grades, and a BGS-graded card with a BAS auto grade competes directly with PSA on price. PSA still has the larger comp pool on cards.
Does a JSA sticker lower the value of a signed card?
It does not lower it, but it usually will not add as much as a PSA or Beckett slab would. If you own a JSA-certified card you plan to sell, you can submit it to PSA or Beckett for grading and keep the JSA letter as supporting provenance.
What is the difference between witnessed and examined authentication?
Witnessed means the authenticator or a partner watched the signature happen and applied the hologram on the spot. Examined means the authenticator studied an existing signature and gave an opinion. Witnessed is worth more and is the only kind Fanatics Authentic issues.
Can I verify a certificate online?
Yes. PSA, Beckett, JSA and Fanatics Authentic each have a free lookup page where you enter the cert or hologram number. Run it before you buy, and make sure the record matches the signer and item type you are holding.
