How did Kimi Antonelli win the 2026 F1 title?

Antonelli needed only a ninth-place finish at the Mexico City Grand Prix. He started fourth and came home third behind winner Max Verstappen and runner-up Lewis Hamilton, according to Formula1.com. "We did it," he said after the race.

The title caps a fast rise. ESPN notes this is only his second F1 season after replacing Hamilton at Mercedes in 2025. Vettel had held the youngest-champion mark since 2010, when he won at 23 years and 134 days. Antonelli also ended a 73-year wait for a third Italian world champion. The season continues with the Sao Paulo Grand Prix on Nov. 6-8.
